rails to trails conservancy

Dear Campaign Advocate,

Happy New Year!

As usual, when an urgent response was needed, you responded in spades.

In December, we notified you of an important opportunity for the Campaign for Active Transportation. Working closely with Rails-to-Trails Conservancy (RTC), the office of Rep. Earl Blumenauer (D-Ore.) drafted and started initial vetting of the Active Community Transportation Act. If passed, this Act will establish a permanent funding source to invest in active transportation systems in communities around the country.

In our efforts to solicit broad bipartisan congressional backing for this legislation, we turned to you to deliver signatures on a letter of support. In mere weeks—around the winter holidays, no less—you have secured the signatures of more than 160 local, regional, state and national leaders. The letter (list in progress) is a powerful testament to the broad appeal across the country for more and better-connected active transportation systems.

Over the next 24 hours, we will finalize the initial organizational support letter to deliver to Rep. Blumenauer’s office. If you are able to identify any last-minute opportunities to add names to the list, please e-mail Kartik Sribarra at kartik@railstotrails.org with the signer’s name, title, organization (can also be a municipality or other governmental agency) and city/county and state. This final round of signatures is due tomorrow, Friday, January 8 by 9 a.m. EST.

Thank you, once again, for your commitment to active transportation. Rep. Blumenauer and other allies will now use this letter to build support in Congress for this legislation.

On a related note, RTC is proud to be a co-sponsor of the Urban Pathways to Livable Communities Conference, February 25-26 in New Orleans. The conference will bring together transportation, public health and urban planning professionals to explore key strategies for building effective partnerships to develop healthy, walkable and bikeable neighborhoods. Confirmed speakers include U.S. Representative Anh "Joseph" Cao.

Day One of the conference, hosted by RTC's Urban Pathways Initiative, is dedicated to practitioners working to develop and encourage use of shared-use pathways in urban neighborhoods. Invites to this one-day forum are available by preregistering.

Read more about the conference, including a draft agenda, and pre-register now, at www.railstotrails.org/conference.

Thank you,
