rails to trails conservancy
Dear Advocate,

I need your help to bolster support for S. 575 in the U.S. Senate.

Senate Bill 575 (S. 575) would fund clean transportation choices (walking, biking and transit) to reduce driving, while saving Americans money in the process.

Investing in active transportation (trails, walking and bicycling) is a very cost-effective way to address many of the challenges our nation is facing. S. 575, the Clean Low-Emissions Affordable New Transportation Equity Act (“CLEAN-TEA”), would ensure that, if Congress passes climate change legislation, a portion of the revenue collected from such legislation would be available to expand clean and affordable transportation choices—trails, walking, bicycling and transit.

If Congress passes a climate bill that does not adequately fund clean transportation options, we will have missed a crucial opportunity. Cars and light trucks emit about 20 percent of the greenhouse gases generated in the U.S. each year. Unfortunately, however, the current U.S. House bill steers a meager one percent of climate revenue to clean transportation.

And finally, the cost savings: just the health care and fuel savings from investing in active transportation result in more than $1,500 in benefits nationally for every ton of emitted CO2 reduced, with tens of millions of reduced tons expected annually. So, the greater the investment, the bigger the return in health care and fuel savings.

Please speak up for S. 575 now.

As Rails-to-Trails Conservancy (RTC) continues to advocate and lobby for trails, walking and bicycling across the country, as we have been doing since 1986, we have often relied on your voice as the ultimate stakeholders of this process. You have been unfailingly responsive in speaking up when the need arises.

Thank you so much.
