rails to trails conservancy

Dear Campaign Advocate,

On Friday, May 13, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released the application process for Community Transformation Grants (CTGs).

We want you to know about this exciting program that can aid efforts to advance community active transportation goals.

CTGs, authorized through the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010, aim to "support the implementation, evaluation, and dissemination of evidence-based community preventive health activities to reduce chronic disease rates, prevent the development of secondary conditions, address health disparities, and develop a stronger evidence base for effective prevention programming."

The following guidelines may help clarify how your community could benefit:

  • Communities of all sizes are eligible, but to apply separately from a state, a local government must have a population greater than 500,000;
  • "Active living and healthy eating" represents one of just a few focus areas for the grants;
  • Programmatic and infrastructure changes are within the scope of the program; and
  • Project period is for five years, with implementation grants ranging from $500,000 to $10 million for the first year for state and local governments or nonprofits.

More information is available through the CDC’s CTG website. In particular, these Frequently Asked Questions and webinars, the first of which is scheduled for this coming Wednesday, May 25, should help answer clarifying questions.

You may want to reference your Campaign for Active Transportation case statement, should you decide to apply for a CTG.

Sincerely,

Rails-to-Trails Conservancy
